About Bordeaux France

Bordeaux has been on UNESCO's list since 2007 as the Port of the Moon, an Enlightenment city with more protected buildings than any in France except Paris, and Saint-Émilion's vineyards joined in 1999, the first wine region to be listed. Around the city lie the appellations the 1855 classification made famous: Margaux on the left bank, Saint-Émilion and Pomerol on the right, Pessac-Léognan to the south. The Bordeaux France Vineyards

The 1855 classification ranked 88 growths for the Paris Universal Exhibition: 60 Médoc reds and Château Haut-Brion, and 27 sweet whites from Sauternes and Barsac. Saint-Émilion keeps its own list, revised every decade, and the Graves have theirs, 14 estates now all in Pessac-Léognan.

Things to Do in Bordeaux France

The Flèche Saint-Michel, 114 m, reopened in 2025 after its restoration and is climbed from April to October at EUR 7. The Chartrons' Sunday market on the quays has about 60 stalls, and the water mirror opposite the Bourse runs daily outside winter.

Most private days collect you at your hotel. Without a tour, the TER from Bordeaux stops at Saint-Émilion station, about 20 minutes' walk below the village, from EUR 9.50.

The harvest runs from late summer into autumn, and each estate sets its own dates. Saint-Émilion's Fête des Vendanges falls on 10 and 11 October 2026, with 45 Grands Crus Classés taking part. Some private half days do not run on 25 December, 1 January or 1 May, so check the card if your dates fall there.

Do You Need a Tour to Visit the Bordeaux France Vineyards?

Not for the city: the old town is walkable, the tourist office runs its own guided walk, and the Cité du Vin is a tram ride. Not strictly for Saint-Émilion either: the TER stops at Saint-Émilion station, about 20 minutes' walk below the village, and bus 304 runs from Place des Quinconces in high season. There are no Bordeaux France tickets for the vineyards as a whole; each sight sells its own, and the underground visit under Saint-Émilion is guided only, so make your Bordeaux France reservation for it with the village's tourist office.

Those are the Bordeaux France ticket prices for doing it yourself: the train from EUR 9.50, the bell tower climb in Saint-Émilion EUR 2. A Bordeaux vineyard tour earns its fare when you want château visits and tastings arranged for you, both banks in one day, or a driver so that nobody in your party drives after tasting. The routes by train and bus are laid out in Saint-Émilion without a tour.

How much do Bordeaux France tours cost?

A guided city walk starts at $16 and a shared half day in Saint-Émilion at $86. Full small-group wine days run $178-$292 a person, and private days $286-$878 a person, with a few priced per car instead. Check whether the tasting fees are in the fare before you compare.

Are wine tastings included in Bordeaux wine tours?

On the shared small-group days, yes: the fare covers the château visits and the tastings. On several private days the fare covers the car and the guide, and you pay each château on the day; the DS convertible listing quotes EUR 10-60 a person a château. Every tour card says which.

Saint-Émilion or the Médoc: which should you choose?

Saint-Émilion gives you a medieval, UNESCO-listed village and its classified estates on the right bank, about 50 minutes away by van. The Médoc is the left bank's road of the 1855 growths, through Margaux, Saint-Julien and Pauillac. Some days sell both at once.

Do you need to book Bordeaux France tours in advance?

Book the shared days early for summer and September: the vans hold eight at most, and one half day needs two people to run. Private days need notice too, because the guide books each château visit ahead.

How long is a Bordeaux wine tour?

Half days run four to four and a half hours, and full days seven to nine. The e-bike days last seven and eight and a half hours, and the city walks one hour 45 minutes to three hours.

Is hotel pickup included?

On all but one of the private days, yes: the driver collects you in Bordeaux, and some will also collect you from a cruise ship or river boat. The shared days meet at a fixed point in the centre, and the Cognac day meets at Place de la Comédie.

Can children join a Bordeaux France wine tour?

Some can. Several private days take children and pour them soft drinks, while the shared days set their own minimum age, from 14 on one e-bike day to 16 or 18 on most. Under-18s never taste.

Is lunch included?

Lunch is in the fare on the full Saint-Émilion days with a picnic or a meal at a château, and on both e-bike days. Most private days leave lunch to you.

Can you cancel a Bordeaux wine tour?

Most tours refund in full up to 24 hours before the start. One small-group Saint-Émilion day is non-refundable, and the tourist office's walk needs 48 hours' notice.
